"This is the second one stolen from me in 10 days" : what they do to stop seeing their packages disappear

Parcel thefts are increasing in mailboxes. While the delivery person sends a photo of the package correctly delivered, how can you assert your rights? Some residents prefer another alternative, especially for valuable objects.

The French send their gifts ordered online by mail to offer them under the tree. Relatives who live a little too far away also send packages to children and in this context, home delivery remains the most common reflex. When everything goes well, the delivery person delivers the package in person. But, in case of absence, it is often left in the mailbox or in front of the door, sometimes accompanied by a photo supposed to prove the correct delivery.

As Christmas approaches, package thefts explode. Testimonies are multiplying, like that of this resident of Val-de-Marne: “This is the 2nd package that disappears in 10 days“, she wrote on Facebook. Indeed, if these thefts increase during this end-of-year period, it is because they are, for the most part, valuable. And contrary to popular belief, delivery people or postmen are not the first to be blamed.

In many cases, this could be a neighbor or anyone with a master key, capable of opening all the mailboxes in a building simultaneously. Once access is obtained, simply use and close everything. Thieves primarily target large packages or those that appear to contain valuable items. And, once the package is stolen, it is difficult to prove that you did not receive it, especially if a photo was taken by the delivery person at the time of drop-off. Faced with this risk, more and more people are changing their habits. Many now favor parcel relays, considered more secure since the parcels are carefully preserved until collection. Others opt for delivery to the workplace, to a loved one present during the day, or choose automatic lockers when they are available.

Finally, to request a refund, the first step is to contact the seller’s customer service, not that of the carrier. You must report the package as not received, explain the circumstances and provide the available elements: order number, proof of payment, exchanges with the carrier, delivery photo if it exists. During the holiday season, it is therefore better to anticipate. For valuable gifts, choosing a secure delivery method and avoiding mailbox delivery can make all the difference. A simple reflex that helps avoid many disappointments as Christmas approaches.
