Softer than panettone and without candied fruit, this typical Italian Christmas cake arrives at Lidl

This Italian cake eaten only during the end-of-year holidays is on the shelves in Lidl supermarkets.

In Italy too, the end of year celebrations are a good opportunity to get together with family and have fun. If Santa Claus, armed with his sack, also delivers our neighbors from the boot, over there, we don’t enjoy chocolate logs. On Italian Christmas tables, sweet pleasures are different from ours. To end the meal, Italians are spoiled for choice. In Campania, the Neapolitans are particularly fond of struffolismall ball-shaped donuts, flavored with orange blossom. The inhabitants of central Italy enjoy homemade gingerbread, called panpepato in Umbria. But two other desserts share the spotlight in the hearts of all Italians.

THE panettonea brioche with raisins and candied citrus peel, is “the” undisputed star of Italian Christmases. Its production, industrialized after the Second World War, makes it a rather inexpensive product, accessible to all budgets, and widely exported. Delicately wrapped in a pretty paper wrapper or decorated metal box, it is offered as a precious gift. Like many French and foreign supermarkets, Lidl also offers them for the end-of-year holidays. But the German discount brand doesn’t stop there! It also sells another type of Italian brioche, even more airy…

Softer and lighter than panettoneTHE pandoro is renowned for its delicate vanilla taste. Originally from Verona, in Veneto, its name means “golden bread”. Star-shaped, it is not garnished like the panettonebut simply sprinkled with icing sugar. Ideal for those who are not fans of raisins and candied fruits. At Lidl, the pandoro of 1 kg from the German brand Favorina is sold for 6.99 euros each. It will be available on shelves from Thursday November 20 to Wednesday December 24, 2025, specifies the brand.

Of course, artisanal versions of pandoro are certainly even tastier. But for those who want to discover this product and get a taste of Italy, the Lidl reference seems an excellent compromise.
